In preparation for the 2nd International Symposium on Global South Studies, the Global South Collective collaborates with the Vietnamese Humanities and Social Sciences Association (VHSSA) to host a series of webinars offering our beloved followers and audiences insights from scholars across disciplines.
Our series started with a webinar “On becoming a scholar during PhD”, facilitated by Nguyen Minh Thanh (UC Louvain, Belgium), Dong Bich Ha (University of Manitoba, Canada), and Vu Hoang Long (Brock University, Canada). They shared their journeys to “do” their PhDs in multiple socio-cultural backgrounds.

Webinar 2, named “What is a theoretical framework?” facilitated by Dr. Le Nguyen Hoang Giang (Thompson Rivers University, Canada), began to delve into the solid foundation of the research world. In this webinar, Dr. Giang introduced ‘reflexivity’ as a critical way to think and rethink theory. “I always tell young researchers that theory is much harder to learn and to teach”, Dr. Giang said.

After the call for paper submission to the 2nd International Symposium on Global South Studies themed “Global Southerning Care in Scenes of Everyday Life”, has been published, the following webinars will be dedicated to the concept of care and work on care. On top of that, webinar 3: “Caring reflexivity in the age of generative AI: Rethinking ethics in social” facilitated by Dr. Kien Nguyen-Trung (Monash University, Australia). He, once again, mentioned ‘reflexivity’ as a way of thinking and doing research, especially showcasing how we care about our research when working with AI. This webinar was recorded with consent from facilitators and participants. Click this link to access the recording.

In the next webinar, named “Theorizing Care as Anti-Oppressive Practice in Multilingual Education“, Dr. Anwar Ahmed (Assistant Professor, University of British Columbia, Canada) shared with us how care plays a role in constructing an anti-oppressive pedagogy for marginalized learners in language education. He ran through how the concept of care problematizes inequalities in multiple aspects of life, such as sleep, self-care, and language education.

Webinar 5, with the topic “Why and How can we demonstrate care in doing human-involved qualitative research?” led by Dr. Nghia Tran, showcases researchers’ responsibility, ethics, and reflexivity in conducting their studies. Care goes beyond ethical principles and becomes a critical approach to inquiry. Scan the QR code in the poster to register. This webinar will not be recorded.

How do diverse socio-cultural backgrounds shape the research journeys of PhD scholars in the Global South?
Hi Ensiklopedia,
Thank you for your interest in our webinars. Your question is worth researching, and we see its potential to become an attractive presentation at our symposium this August. We are accepting abstracts until June 15. You can find the call for submissions via this link.
